[edit] Definition of a Student Organization

A Student Organization is a group officially registered through the Student Involvement and Leadership Center and is composed primarily of currently enrolled students - 75% of the membership or more. All officers must be currently enrolled students.

Main article: Student Organizations

Several student organizations have articles written about them on this wiki. For a complete list of all the student organizations registered at KU, visit the SILC Organizations Directory.

[edit] Benefits of Registering a Student Organization

Registered student organizations that are open to all students are entitled to $200 of general funding from the Student Senate unallocated account. This funding may be used for general usage such as printing and office supplies.

Groups may also apply for funding for events, speakers, and other costs throughout the year by contacting a student senator who can write a bill to request funding for the group.

[edit] How To Register a Group

Recently, the process for reigstering a student organization has been moved completely online. To begin, visit the SILC's student organizations site, which allows you to register a new group or edit an existing group.

[edit] Requirements

There are a few basic requirements that a student organization must meet to become registered with SILC:

  1. The officers of the group must all be enrolled KU students.
  2. The membership of the group must be over 75% KU students.
  3. There must be at least 4 members to register the group (likewise, the group must have at least 4 officers.
  4. Each organization must have a faculty adviser.

During the registration process, an officer must submit the name of a President, Vice President, two other officers (often the Treasurer and Secretary), including his/herself, and the faculty adviser of the group. After completing the registration, the group will not be officially registered until the other 3 officers and the adviser confirm their participation by following an automatically generated link in an email they will receive.

[edit] General Statement from SILC

The Student Involvement and Leadership Center has the following statement on its Web site:

All organizations functioning on the Lawrence Campus of the University of Kansas are required to register with the University. Registration provides several advantages; official identification as a University affiliated group, use of designated University facilities and services, coordination and communication of group activities with campus administration and other organizations, and eligibility to receive funding form Student Senate.

Organizations must be established for legal purposes consistent with the broad educational aims of the University and in accord with regulations, guidelines, and policies of the University, the City of Lawrence, and the State of Kansas. However, registration does not imply University endorsement of the purposes of an organization, nor does the University assume sponsorship of or responsibility for any group activities on or off University property.
