Contents

[edit] Purpose

  • Inform: Provide a resource to KU students, future, past, and present that will help students navigate the often-complicated life of a college student at KU.
  • Recruit: Find new potential editors and enable them to add content to the resource
  • Adjudicate: Settle disputes and policy violations on the Wiki

[edit] History

The Project was first conceived in a brainstorm of student senate coalition ConnectKU leaders in Fall of 2007 under the name of WiKUpedia. That Winter Break, early editors began to begin the framework of the project by focusing on Student Senate and Student Fees. On January 27, 2008, WiKUpedia was first unveiled to coalition members and the media. In one month, WiKUpedia grew from 83 articles as of the launch date to 488 true content pages. Following the 2008 Student Senate Election, it was decided that WiKUpedia needed a domain separate from the ConnectKU site. In late May 2008, the site was renamed KUpedia and moved to it's new home at [www.kupedia.org]. To see current KUpedia statistics, see: Special:Statistics.

[edit] Relationship to ConnectKU

  • The KUpedia Project is an independent student organization from the student senate coalition. The Project began as a Student Initiative, but is not directly a part of the coalition. The student senate campaign plans on making liberal use of the KUpedia, but only in an effort to provide student organizations, departments, and KU entities to connect with students.
  • The Project will continue past the election and for years to come.

[edit] State of the Project

The KUpedia:State of the Project is a monthly e-newsletter to be sent to all the members in the Facebook group and cross-posted to the wiki at the end of every month with an update on the status of the project.

[edit] Other things to include

  • Featured new articles
  • Member and Article counts
  • Current projects and things we are working on

[edit] Meetings

  • As of right now, there are no scheduled meetings of the organization. All policy decisions and discussions should be held on the Wiki for all interested parties to see and comment. There are no official members -- any user who registers is a Project Member and their voice is equally heard.
  • There will be another informational session for the community to learn about the project sometime in March.

[edit] Policies

  • For a list of current policy, see: KUpedia:About
  • The project will collaboratively decide new policies as we see fit. If you have a suggestion, please add it to the talk page.

[edit] Criticism

KUpedia is potentially vulnerable to attack because there are few people who monitor new changes, the site allows anonymous editing of nearly any page, and any KU student can access the page from any number of on campus IPs. Removing anonymous editing could help this problem, but would deter only the least motivated of vandals. The only solution is increased monitoring of all posts, especially those made by anonymous users. You can help monitor pages by clicking on Recent Changes and looking at anonymous edits. So far, this has not proven to be too significant of a problem.
