Margaret Hashinger Hall, often called Hashinger or just Hash, is a co-ed residence hall at the University of Kansas. It currently houses 430 students, co-ed by wing. It is designated the Center for the Creative Arts.

[edit] History

Hashinger Hall opened in 1960 as an all Women's Dorm. In 1972-1973, it was switched to a co-ed residence hall, taking on the position as the creative arts residence hall.[1] The residence hall has put on musicals, plays, and various performances since. Additional facilities, such as a darkroom, a kitchen and studio facilities for art students were added over time.

In years before the remodeling, the bottom floor was used to put on the Tunnel of Oppression, in part due to the dingy state it had become. Some students said it was one of the creepiest places on Daisy Hill.

During the last year it was open before renovations, the 7th and 8th floors of Hashinger Hall were closed to give contractors a head start on renovations.

[edit] Remodel

Hashinger Hall was closed for a $10 million dollar renovation during the 2005-2006 school year. This is nearly six times its original price of $1.9 million.

Included in the renovation was asbestos removal, a re-design of the front facade, new windows, new heating and air conditioning, new furniture and new bathroom facilities. Additionally, a coffee shop called The Studio was added to the second level, with a convenience store and restaurant also included. The theater on the 3rd floor was expanded and the roof raised.

Current "Hashies" participated in the design process and their input directed the final design. While new spaces were created, the desire to build a special community was retained and continues to develop in the hall.

[edit] Culture

Hashinger Hall is known for its vibrant community and traditions. Hashinger is the Center for the Creative Arts, and has a dance studio and several music practice rooms. The Hashinger community also puts on plays, and has many other traditions, one of the most noticeable can be seen outside the building on most nights. Its porch has become a gathering place throughout the nights, and is frequented by many residents, and also residents of other residence halls.
